A fresh survey has identified crucial sensory issues in workplace conditions and how they may be tackled through workplace style and strategy.
In another of the initial surveys of its type, flooring manufacturer style and Tarkett company HOK asked neurodiverse people in the UK, US and Canada to talk about how their work conditions could focus on their jobs and private needs better. Genius Within, an organisation focused on helping neuro-minorities maximise their possible, provided advisory services because the Tarkett and HOK group built on in-depth analysis. The research contains insights by HOK and the industrial interiors colour specification guideline produced by Tarkett to suggest businesses on how best to cater for inclusive style.
Neurodiversity identifies variations in individual neurocognitive functioning – the various ways we think, procedure information, and relate with others. Survey respondents specifically identified the next workplace strategy and design solutions employers could consider:
- Offer training and education about neurodiversity to all or any staff
- Offer all employees (neurodiverse and neurotypical) a number of workplace choices, from open office environments to private, to handle various sensory stimulations
- Provide spaces that support and encourage physical movement and usage of natural light
- Create flexible work policies that provide people autonomy over their work and schedule environment, including work-from-home opportunities when feasible

As the pandemic has normalised hybrid work and encouraged a wider conversation around employee wellbeing, the Tarkett and HOK survey suggests opportunities exist for organisations to accomplish more to support their workers still.
